Simple but nice accommodation in the mountains. It is in a very quiet location with a beautiful view. You can go on nice walks by your own or with a guide. Emmanuel and Grace are very nice, helpful hosts! The journey by bus was uncomplicated and I was able to take the bus from Dar es Salaam directly to the hostel. I can recommend the accommodation and will be happy to visit again :)

Wonderful and unique experience. My daughter (15 years old) and I visited Staphanie and the Masaii boma she and her family live in for three days. It was a truly unique and touching experience. We both felt welcome, safe, and relaxed the entire time, while staying with people and in an environment that in many ways were exotic and completely different from what we are used to from home (Denmark). Most people in the boma (and the surrounding village) do not speak English, however, they were all friendly and still keen to communicate. We had very interesting conversations with the few people in the boma (young men / worriers) that spoke English. Stephanie was responsive and helpful in sorting out all our questions about logistics, etc., before our arrival. She also spent a lot of time showing us around and taking care of us during our visit. It was a really special experience for us. We feel indebted to Stephanie to invite us into her community and giving us many special experiences, most importantly, visiting and learning about the life of people, not the least the women, living in a Masaii boma. Stephanie is heading several projects in the community, including a sanitary kit sewing workshop for local women -- important and impressive work. We stayed in a small, comfortable concrete-walled building, which Stephanie and her husband had constructed for visitors. Life is simple, with bucket showers and meals based on local ingredients, which we much enjoyed. Both my daughter and I have travelled in many parts of the world. We both thought the visit to the boma was a unique, warm, touching experience, which taught us much about life. We much hope to be back.

Explore the beautiful East Usambara Mountains

This is a very special place in the mountains which exceeded our expectations! We were one of the first to book it on airbnb as it's just been put up,and are so glad we got lucky! This is truly off the beaten track, staying in a lodge on the mountain side with spectacular views, nestled among tea plantations, with many lovely hikes/walks nearby which the hosts can support with. All the villagers were extremely welcoming and the staff took really good care of us. For a little extra you can go full board (would recommend this unless you plan to cook as there are no shops or restaurants nearby) and the food was some of the best we had in Tanzania! There are currently three different cabins (or rather one is more like a lodge and the other are wooden cabins) each with its own design and character. Perhaps the most special part was opting to hike up to this place for 2 hours - with support from a guide who also helped with one of our bags. While it revealed our lack of fitness (!) it was a very memorable way to reach our accommodation...although it is possible to drive up if you ask the hosts and we used motorbike taxis to get back down at the end of our stay. Finally, we liked it so much that we then went straight on to villa matalai, the other beach side spot the owners have near Tanga, which was just as special. Overall, this mountain getaway is a good place to totally escape and switch off, and felt more like a homestay than a hotel. The owners have lived in Tanzania for decades, speak swahili and are clearly committed to supporting the local community. We couldn't have thought of a better way to transition from Arusha to the coast, and highly recommend staying at both of their places if you have time!
